Need an excuse to go to the market today?
- Crowbar has harvest moonfire pear muffins. They’re incredible!
- Fruition has moved into its new space on the upper level. Go show them some support!
- Jitterbug has pumpkin spice soda. Pumpkin. Spice. Soda.
- So many pumpkins!
- It’s the market - who needs an excuse?

Caribbean Black Bean Soup
I absolutely love black beans. I like them in soup, I like them in burritos, I like them in salads, I like them plain with rice. This soup is probably my favourite way to eat them though. My mom started making it before I went vegan (or vegetarian for that matter) and I’ve always enjoyed it! If you need a hearty soup to please both vegans and omnivores and all in between, this is it.

Restaurant Review: Brasserie
One of my favourite food memories is eating a chocolate fondant (more often called a molten chocolate lava cake) for the first time. A friend of my mom’s brought me one, and from the first bite it was like I’d died and gone to heaven. It had slightly crisp edges, a super soft interior, and a middle of melty chocolate goodness. In the years following I’d try many different molten...

Biscoff Cupcakes
I know I’ve been gone for a while, and I’m sorry. Vacation managed to get the best of me. I’m back now with some awesome reviews of restaurants I went to in Cayman, and some new recipes! I figured the best way to start off again is to dive right in with one of my favourite new recipes - Biscoff cupcakes. Biscoff cookies, very similar to speculoos cookies, used to be served on...

Pancakes!
My parents were never big on eating breakfast during the week when I was growing up (really, they still aren’t - I think they run on coffee). Even so, I have some great memories of family breakfasts when I was a kid. When we did have breakfast on the weekend, I always loved my mom’s buttermilk pancakes. Now that I’m vegan those aren’t an option, but I love making these...

Rice and Peas [50th Post!]
When I first started this blog, I was determined that I would stick to it, and not give up after a few posts like I usually do. Hitting 50 posts is a big sign of success in my opinion! Hopefully I’ll be at 100 posts in no time.
Now, onto today’s recipe - rice and peas.
Rice and peas is a really common Caribbean side dish, and one of my favourite things to eat when I miss Cayman....

Berry Lime Cupcakes: vanilla cake with mixed berry...
I was finally successful in making my berry lime cupcakes! These turned out great, with just the right about of sweetness. Non-vegans didn’t believe these were vegan, which I consider to be some of the highest praise from people who think vegan means “I eat tofu and grass”.
Also, I finally have a buttercream recipe for you! Yay! And there’s a recipe for the berry...

[Raw] Mango Cheesecake
Cheesecake was one of my favourite deserts before becoming vegan. While I know I don’t miss dairy cheesecake, I do still love a good vegan cheesecake (see my post about Sweet Hereafter for proof!) During my raw week, I decided I was finally going to try making my own vegan cheesecake, and I’ve been wanting to try a recipe that uses cashews for creaminess for awhile now. I based my...

Trying out raw veganism
For the past four days, I’ve been eating “raw vegan”, which is really just what it sounds like - eating all uncooked vegan food. This means that on top of not eating animal products, I haven’t had any cooked foods, grains, or legumes either. I guess what I’ve been doing is a modified raw vegan, because I’ve still had balsamic vinegar and olive oil, but...

Tips for Flying While Vegan
Hello Internet people!
As you know, I was traveling this Wednesday. I spent about fourteen hours in airports and airplanes all together. Because my family has always been pretty spread out across North America, I’ve done trips like this at least twice a year, often three times, for the past six years, as well as flying a fair amount before that.
When you’re an omnivore, airports and...

Surprise Muffins
I guess I’m on a bit of a muffin kick right now.
One of my favourite muffins has always been the “surprise muffin”. It looks innocent enough on the outside, but there’s a surprise on the inside - delicious fruit jam! My mom used to make these when I was younger, but I haven’t had them in years. I decided to make some the other day, and they were just as good as I...

Hey out there!
May has been a pretty good month for me and the blog. I’ve finally gotten into what I think is a decent posting routine, I’ve cooked up some yummy things, and I’ve gotten a lot of new followers! (Thanks by the way!)
Tomorrow I’m leaving Halifax for six weeks to visit my parents in the Cayman Islands. I’ll definitely still be blogging, though it might be a little less...
lessexcusesmoreendurance asked: sorry if this is obvious, but i just want to check: that carrot cake muffin recipe makes 6 muffins, right? thank you!! (definitely gonna try that recipe. it looks awesome! thanks for sharing it!)

Cinnamon Streusel Muffins
If I was a spice, I’m pretty sure I’d be cinnamon.
Whenever recipes give an amount for cinnamon or vanilla, I kind of maybe tend to ignore them a little (I blame this on my mom). I saw a recipe for allspice streusel muffins the other day, and I immediately thought of how delicious a cinnamon streusel muffin would be! This recipe is adapted and veganized from one at Grandma’s...

Spinach Appreciation Post!
Today I was thinking that it might be fun to write some food appreciation posts! In these posts, I’ll write about some of my favourite foods and how I like to eat them. I’m also hoping that people will let me know how they like to eat them, as new ways to eat food I already like sounds really good to me!
As I’ve been eating a fair bit of it recently, I decided to do my first...

Alright kiddies
(and those who are likely a fair deal older than me)
I have been having a rough time over the past few days. I’m not going to get into it on here, but yeah, it’s been less than great. Still, I won’t give up on this blog! New recipe up in the next seven days, or write me a whole bunch of nasty messages.
Thanks to those who are still sticking around, even with all the ups and...

Fruition is there, as well as Vegan Nation, and I was told there’s going to be a lecture. Definitely check it out if you have time! Sadly I’ll be in class.

Update!
Hey everyone =]
Thanks for your patience with me! I know I’m super late on when I told you I would update. I was lacking motivation, my shitty camera was depressing me, and I felt like everything I posted had to be completely original and Earth shattering - that’s a pretty tall order for a food blog.
So! In the past few days I’ve realized that I cook a lot of stuff that people...

Hey fellow halivegans (and those who just think...
This week has some exciting things coming up! I have a new vegan product to review and some yummy pictures to share. Sadly my Pete’s and farmer’s market posts are going to be very infrequent for the next little while, as Halifax is having a bus strike right now and the hour walk to the farmer’s market is not appealing in the slightest. Instead, I’ll try to do more...

Day 7: I made it!
[Sorry this post is late everyone, my Internet was wonky yesterday]
Happy to say that I made it through this challenge. There were some slip ups here and there, but overall, I’m pleased with how I did. Here’s what I ate on my final day:
11:00: waffles with syrup (maple instead of the sugar/corn syrup/water blend I usually buy, so yay for that!) and black cherry berry tea 2:00: soy...

Day 6: Groceries are my favourite
I’m happy to say this challenge is getting easier and easier! I cheated a little at breakfast, but it happens to the best of us. Also, thanks for the suggestions threeelibras and daniisfairyodd!
Today was fun because I got to go to Planet Organic! I try to go there as little as possible and restrict myself heavily once I’m actually in the store because everything is so fantastic and...

Day 5: Could use some ideas.
Today wasn’t bad at all. I had three home made meals and a good amount of fresh snacks. Still, my brain is in a rut, and I’m running out of ideas of what to make myself without relying on processed foods. Maybe tomorrow I’ll run down to Planet Organic and get some TVP and make shepherd’s pie. Would you all count TVP as processed?
Breakfast: Oatmeal (oats, water, pumpkin...

Day 4: Vegan Martha Stewart
I am super proud of myself today. Before 11:00am, I’d finished making soup and banana bread. Excusing how messy everything was after, I felt like the vegan Martha Stewart (minus the jail time). The recipe for the banana bread can be found here. The only changes I made were adding a 1/2 cup combined walnut pieces and chocolate chips, and baking for 45 minutes instead of 50.
11:00: Banana...

Day 3: Not bad!
Today I managed to remember my challenge all day! I’m pretty proud of myself for that, considering yesterday. I didn’t eat anything that wasn’t okay (at least on the list) today! My meals were a little weird, so today is all in times.
11:30: banana and chiabatta 2:00: Macintosh apple 4:30: mini pitas and hummus, banana, and raspberries 7:00: Macintosh apple and raspberries 9:30:...

Day 2: Always harder than Day 1.
Today wasn’t difficult in that I couldn’t think of things to eat. Today was difficult in that I forgot that I was doing a challenge! I know, go me. Anyway, here’s what I ate today:
Breakfast: Oatmeal (oats, water, dried cranberries, walnuts, cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and molasses) Lunch: Soup with Italian bread (pictured below) and a small cup of fresh pressed apple juice 6:30...
